Stage 1 Drought & Efficiency Resources

The City of Thornton has declared a Stage 1 Drought effective March 15, 2026, targeting a 10% reduction in water demand due to record-low snowpack. Mandatory restrictions include limiting outdoor irrigation to two days per week, watering only before 10 a.m. or after 6 p.m., and a prohibition on turf irrigation until May 1. For more details on the restrictions and tips, visit the City of Thornton's drought page.

What is the City of Thornton doing?

Under Stage 1 drought rules, city facilities, schools, HOAs, and commercial properties must reduce outdoor water use by 10%, while athletic fields will prioritize safe playing conditions for youth athletes by reducing irrigation only in lower-use areas. To address increased fire risks, parks staff will manage defensible space, and residents are urged to clear flammable debris and follow local fire restrictions. The Water Resources Division will continue monitoring supply levels and provide regular updates on the Drought Management Plan.
